Why I made Binder

By Exy · · 4 min read

What Binder is, why I made it, what made it so addictive, and what's coming next.

Hi, and welcome to the Dev Diary! Whether you already play Binder or you're just looking around, this is where I share what I'm building, why, and what's coming next.

What is Binder?

Binder is a free K-pop photocard collecting game you play in your browser. You open boxes to collect virtual photocards of your favorite idols, and put your best cards in your Binder, where they earn Coins every second. Use those Coins to open better boxes, unlock more slots and hunt for rarer cards.

Some cards come out Shiny or Prismatic, every copy has its own serial number (#1 is the very first one ever pulled), and you can trade cards with other players. Your cards keep earning even while you're away, so you can play a few minutes a day and still make real progress.

It's completely free: no ads, no paid currency, no microtransactions, nothing to buy. Everyone plays in the same economy, and everything is earned in the game.

Why I made it

Honestly? I made it for myself first. 😂

Between work and my business projects, I don't have hours a day to grind a game. But I love gacha and idle games, and I love K-pop photocards. I wanted something I could open whenever I had a free moment, see my progress, and close again, without feeling like I had to play all day to keep up. That's why your cards keep earning while you're away.

I also wanted to avoid something I don't like in many gacha games: the moment you start wondering if you should buy premium currency, a battle pass or a boost just to keep up. In Binder, there's simply nothing to buy.

From Binder v1 to Binder v2

The first version, Binder v1, was a single-player game made just for me: the same idea of opening boxes and collecting cards, and that was it. Nobody else could play it.

Then AI coding tools got good enough that I thought: what if other people could play too? So I vibe coded my way from that little single-player game to a multiplayer one. That became Binder v2, the game you can play today (and the reason the website is binderv2.site). Whenever I have free time between projects, I use it to keep building and learning.

What made it fun (maybe too fun)

Going multiplayer changed everything. A few features made Binder so much more addictive than I expected:

  • The Marketplace. Once you could buy and sell cards with other players, every card suddenly had a real value. A card you didn't need could become someone else's treasure, and checking what your rarest cards are worth became a game of its own. Auctions made it even better: watching the last minutes of a bidding war is way too exciting.
  • Live News. A ticker at the top of the screen announces big moments as they happen: a super rare pull, a big sale, a Shiny or Prismatic card. Seeing someone pull a card you've been hunting for makes you want to open "just one more box."
  • Leaderboards. Earning power, collection value, top sellers, login streaks... Seeing your name climb, or someone pass you overnight, keeps you coming back to check your progress.

Together, they turned a quiet collecting game into a little community where people trade, compete and cheer for each other's pulls.

What I've been working on

The last few weeks have been busy:

  • Information in the menu: Patch Notes, this Dev Diary, the FAQ and Guides, with a small reward the first time you read a new post.
  • Marketplace: Trade Value, and the sales history of every card.
  • Submit a Ticket: suggests answers while you type and asks the right questions for each problem.
  • The Diamond Shop: Diamonds now come in bundles, with daily prices that keep Diamonds valuable without changing anything for most players.
  • Smoother maintenance: a countdown beforehand, and Chat and Messages stay open during most maintenance.

What's next

  • Boy groups and more idols! Right now it's mostly girl groups, but boy groups are on the way.
  • Group and set bonuses: equip cards that belong together, like members of the same group or cards from the same set, and get extra earning power.
  • The next Carnival: a limited-time event with its own cards, games and rewards.
  • Guides with screenshots, so new players can learn the game step by step.

Come play, and help shape it

Try to break it. 😂 Binder is still in Open Beta, so I really want to hear about weird behavior, bugs, exploits, or anything that doesn't work the way you'd expect. Use Submit a Ticket in the game.

Suggest idols! Most of the idols in Binder are from groups I know personally or the bigger names I follow. If your favorite idol or group isn't here yet, tell me. 😭

We're still a small community, which makes this a great time to join, collect your favorite idols, and help decide where the game goes next. Thank you for being here. 💙

Binder is an unofficial fan project and is not affiliated with the featured artists, groups, agencies or labels.
